What we do

We can provide birth, death and marriage certificates for East Riding of Yorkshire events, from 1837 onwards, providing you can supply enough details for us to trace the register entry. A fee is payable for the certificate (see below).

Is there a cost involved?

There is a statutory fee of:

• £9.00 for a short or standard copy certficate from non-current register
.

• £7.00 for a short or standard copy certificate from a current register


• £3.50 for a standard copy certificate at the time of the registration
  

  Priority service

  
  Our priority service can produce a certificate within 2 hours or less. The fee is £13, plus the cost of the certificate.
  

  Payment

  
  All cheques should be made payable to "East Riding of Yorkshire Council".
  
  Electronic payment will be accepted for telephone applications.

Obtaining a copy certificate

We will be able to provide copy certificates for events that took place only in the East Riding of Yorkshire.
You will need a :

• name


• date and place of the person where the birth, death or marriage took place

Sometimes entries can be found with less information, and a General Register Office (GRO) reference of year, quarter and district will assist us in our search for the certificate you require.

You may apply online, but you can also apply by letter giving the basic information of name, approx date and place and any other information that may help us in our search.

Unfortunately we are unable to provide copy certificates while you wait but we will endeavour to respond to your requests as quickly as possible - they may be picked up later or posted on. Alternatively, you could use our 2 hour priority service (see costs above).

Is an appointment necessary?

You may request an appointment to look through our indexes, but there is a charge for this service.

However, the indexes can be accessed in other places for free, for example the East Riding Treasure House in Beverley has many indexes of use to family historians.
