Additional Information For those with an interest in the countryside there are plenty of opportunities to work with the East Riding and other partners to improve our nature reserves, country parks and footpaths.

By volunteering you can: learn new practical skills (training is provided), get involved with decision making about a site near you, learn about nature and wildlife and meet people with similar interests.

Who can join?
Anyone over the age of 18 can become a volunteer, whether you are a student looking to gain some experience, retired with time to spare or a local resident wanting to get involved with the conservation of your local area. No previous experience or skills are necesary. Everybody is welcome!

If you are aged under 18 you can join the East Riding Phoenix Group. Volunteers get free admission on our events programme. We also endeavour to help with transport.

East Riding countryside volunteers
The East Riding countryside volunteers carry out regular mid week and weekend volunteer conservation tasks, from coppicing to haymaking. To find out more contact James Taylor on 01482 395208 or email: james.taylor@eastriding.gov.uk

Footpath volunteers
Local ramblers also help improve the rights of way network. To find out more contact James Taylor on 01482 395208 or email: james.taylor@eastriding.gov.uk

Friends of local nature reserves
There are also a number of `friends` groups that look after individual Local Nature Reserves. The friends of the Humber Bridge Country Park hold regular weekend conservation tasks at the Humber Bridge Country Park and also meet once a month at Hessle High School to discuss issues relating to the site. The group has a web site Friends of Humber Bridge Country Park For more information contact Bev Hylton on 01482 395207 or email: fohbcp_secretary@yahoo.co.uk

Sigglesthorne Station and Southorpe Nature Reserve are looked after by the Hornsea and North Holderness Countryside Society.

Beach guardians
Regular beach cleans are also held throughout the East Riding from Flamborough Head to Spurn National Nature Reserve. Many are organised by local volunteer groups who want to improve their local environment. Beach cleans are simple yet effective conservation task that anyone can take part in.

East Riding phoenix
Phoenix is an environmental and wildlife group for young people aged 12 to 19 years. You are invited to join the group if you want to do something positive to help wildlife and have a laugh at the same time. You can also come along to Phoenix as part of your Duke of Edinburgh Award. Contact Bev Hylton on 01482 395 207 or bev.hylton@eastriding.gov.uk

`Wildways`
Wildways is a programme for young people and youth workers that helps them get the most out of their local countryside. So far the project has supported many groups, and young people have gained valuable skills through the project. If you are a youth worker looking for an interesting project for your group contact Bev Hylton on 01482 395207

As well as supporting individual volunteers the Countryside Acces Team work with individual groups who would like to experience voluntary work at a Local Nature Reserve. Common Questions I`d like to volunteer for the Friends of the Humber Bridge Country Park but I`m not sure if I`d like the meetings?

You don`t have to come to meetings to be a volunteer, but we encourage people to come along and have their say. At the meetings we plan the tasks that take place in the Country Park, everything from willow weaving to buildng bird boxes. If you have an idea of what you would like to see happen in the Country Park, then the meetings are an ideal place to put forward your idea.

I`ve been to lots of meetings and they sometimes drag on, how long do meetings of the Friends of the Humber Bridge Country Park last?

The Friends of the Humber Bridge Country Park tend to meet on the third Wednesday of each month at Hessle High School (Heads Lane Campus) although sometimes they meet outdoors if the weather is good, so it is best to ring and find out when the next meeting is if you`re a new member. Each meeting starts at 7 p.m. and finishes at 8.30 p.m. We try and keep things as brief as we can as we know that people are very busy.
