Additional Information

Legal preliminaries

For a marriage to be legal, preliminaries must be completed first. For a Church of England marriage banns are usually read, for all other marriages (religious or civil) notice of marriage must be given at a registration office in the district in which you live, but if either party is a foreign national it may be necessary to give notice at a "designated" office outside of the district of residence. Notice can only be given a maximum of one year prior to the date of the wedding, however you can book your civil ceremony with us provisionally more than a year ahead, for a fee of £20.

To complete the legal preliminaries please ring for an appointment when we explain what documents you will need to provide, such as proof of identity, nationality, address, and evidence of the ending of any previous marriage or civil partnership. If foreign documents are supplied we will need to see a translation. Once notice has been given a minimum statutory period must elapse before your wedding can take place, unless there are exceptional circumstances allowing the Registrar General to agree to waive the normal waiting period.

We can supply a free marriage guide in booklet or CD rom format or you can visit www.ceremoniesineastridingofyorkshire.co.uk
