Childrens plan - enjoy and achieve

Enjoy and achieve is very much the culmination of the first two outcomes.  Healthy, happy children who feel safe will achieve, feel that active participation is a good idea and go on to attain economic well being. This is why when children’s achievements are added up across a school and when schools’ achievements are totalled across the county we find indicators that show children in the East Riding are thriving at all key stages.

This is achieved thanks to the leadership of headteachers, the hard work and commitment of teachers, parents and other adults, and the enthusiasm of the children for learning.  The learning journey starts with the school improvement service working alongside colleagues from the early years team together with schools and settings.

The work on transitions to key stage one has led to a wide range of excellent support for practitioners. Standards at the end of key stages one and two (age seven and 11) are in the top 25 per cent of authorities nationally and have improved significantly over the last four years.  Strategies supported by the local authority, including creative contexts for learning, the STAR (supporting through the arts) project, Wider Participation Pilot (key stage two instrumental tuition), and the SEAL project (social and emotional aspects of learning) have helped East Riding primary schools to high achievement.

Secondary education has also moved forward, with key stage four results (GCSE) showing that 62 per cent of young people in 2006 and 64 per cent in 2007 aged 16 achieved five A*-C grades, an important step on their journey towards economic well-being.
