Frequently asked questions

Please contact the School's Music Service if you require any more information.

Where can I get percussion lessons?

The Schools` music Service offers Percussion lessons in most Secondary schools and many of the primary schools in the East Riding.

How do I go about learning?

First of all see the head of music or music co-coordinator in your school. They will let you know when the Percussion teacher is in and can arrange for you to be assessed.

What instruments are available?

In primary schools most of the percussion teaching will be on glockenspiels, xylophones and other tuned equipment. This is a good way to start even if you want to be a drummer in a rock band!

What sorts of styles can be learnt?

Playing percussion is not just about being a Rock drummer. Our teachers can offer tuition in a range of styles such as Samba drumming, African drumming as well as rock, pop and classical.

When will lessons take place?

Lessons take place in school time and usually last for 25-30 minutes. In
secondary schools ,and in some primary schools there will be a rotating timetable so that you do not miss the same lesson each week. But remember it is up to you to make sure you catch up on any work you miss.

How many times should I practice?

We recommend that you should practice at least 5 times per week for about 20 minutes when you are just starting. You should spread your practice throughout the week and increase the amount and length as you progress. Remember the more regularly you practice the better you will become.

How do I practice? I haven't got a Drum kit at home.

The Schools' Music Service has a stock of Practice pad, Stick and tutor book sets available for purchase by pupils. See the Percussion teacher in school for further details. Some schools operate a practice rota so you may be able to gain regular access to the equipment in for practice purposes.

What will I get out of playing an instrument?

Playing any musical instrument builds communication skills, interactive skills, helps with problem solving and is a fun activity which can stay with you throughout your life! What are you waiting for? Go and see about learning an instrument today!

When can I play in a band?

It wont be long before you are ready to play in an ensemble. In fact you will be playing easy group music in lessons from a very early stage. Your teacher will recommend that you apply to join one of our area ensemblesor attend a workshop when they feel you have reached the required standard.

We also run Saturday morning Project Percussion lessons for pupils with an interest in a wide range of percussion style where we have access to the full range of orchestral Percussion instruments. Pupils from these sessions also have the opportunity to play in our area ensembles.
