The minority ethnic and traveller attainment service (METAS) aims to ensure that all minority ethnic children, including Travellers, have access to a fully inclusive curriculum within mainstream schooling, and that their education is a positive experience.

 

METAS can offer:

  • Advisory support to schools
  • Advisory support to families
  • Support with home-school liaison
  • Cultural Awareness training
  • Access and welfare support
  • Family learning support
  • Partnership training and advice 
  • Distance learning advice and support
  • Support for fair and circus pupils

Information about the Service we provide

Education is regarded as crucial to improving quality of life, enhancing lifelong learning and promoting social justice. METAS works with schools, agencies and families to ensure access and integration of all minority ethnic children into educational provision.

METAS also supports national and local policies and procedures to promote community cohesion.


Minority ethnic communities include new, transient and dispersed communities (refugees, asylum seekers, new arrivals and Travellers).

The term `Traveller` includes: 

  • Gypsy and Roma
  • English, Irish, Welsh & Scottish Travellers
  • Show People (Circus & Fair)
  • Boat Dwellers
  • New Travellers

What geographical area does METAS cover?

The service covers the whole of the East Riding of Yorkshire.
 
Main council Traveller sites: Cottingham (Eppleworth), Cottingham (Woodhill Way), Bridlington (Woldgate).

 

What do I do when a Traveller family wants a school place?

Traveller pupils should be admitted in the normal way if school places are available, otherwise contact METAS for advice.

 

What support is available for Traveller pupils?

Negotiated support following assessment of need by METAS staff, and agreed in METAS Support Agreement.

 

What do I need to know about having Travellers in my school?

Contact METAS for Traveller awareness training.

 

What is dual registration?

Traveller pupils who travel as part of their lifestyle are allowed to be registered at 2 school bases. For further information contact METAS.

 

What do I do when Travellers go travelling?

Provide appropriate distance learning materials and contact METAS for advice on documentation, if necessary.
