Making The Most Of Your Farm

Front cover

The aim of this guide is to help farmers who are thinking about introducing new enterprises onto their holdings, either to support the farm business or as an alternative to farming. It sets out the planning policies that apply in the Yorkshire and Humber region and explains how they may influence the sort of development that is acceptable (more local policies on farm diversification are contained in the Joint Structure Plan and the four Local Plans that cover the East Riding).

The guide suggests a way of looking at the assets of a farm and the area around it to identify the schemes that would be most appropriate from a planning point of view. It also illustrates the kind of schemes already being undertaken in the region.

A revised guide has now been published and is available to view on the link below. The guide has been funded by Yorkshire Forward as part of its Rural Economic Recovery Programme, with contributions from The Countryside Agency, DEFRA and the Yorkshire and Humber Assembly.
