Climate Change

Climate Change is described by many world leaders as the single biggest threat to mankind. Global Warming through an increase in greenhouse gas emission, has already started to make significant changes to the environment.

The East Riding of Yorkshire and its neighbours are particularly at risk from climate change, due to its eroding coastline and locality along the Humber estuary.

East Riding Environmental Footprint Pledge

In June 2007, East Riding of Yorkshire Council signed up to the East Riding Environmental Footprint Pledge (EREFP).

The Pledge was based around the principles of the Nottingham Declaration on Climate Change, and commits the Council to produce an action plan outlining how it will reduce its environmental footprint while at the same time begin to prepare and adapt to climate change.

Prior to the signing of the EREFP East Riding of Yorkshire Council had already began to make steps to mitigate and adapt to climate change with a number of key developments. These include:

  • Working in partnership with the Environment Agency to improve flood defences
  • The completion of the rollout of 'The Green and the Blue' kerbside collection scheme, coupled with the development of the 'Target 45+' waste strategy
  • The transfer of all of the Council's streetlights to energy produced from a renewable source
  • The construction of a number of cycle lanes on strategic routes.
  • Working with the Local Strategic Partnership, to identify how the Council, other government organisations, business and community groups can work together to tackle climate change.
