Key Functions of SACRE

  • Advising the Local Authority on matters connected with religious education and collective worship, as the Local Authority may refer, or as the SACRE sees fit.

  • Monitoring provision and standards in religious education.

  • Advising on methods of teaching, choice of materials, and provision of teacher training.

  • Supporting schools in reviewing and self-evaluating their provision for religious education and collective worship.

  • Considering complaints about the provision and delivery of religious education and collective worship referred to it by the Local Authority.

  • Publishing an annual report of its work, and sending it to QCA.

  • Making a determination on collective worship when requested.

  • Requiring the review of an agreed syllabus for religious education adopted by the Local Authority.

Decision Making

On any question to be decided by SACRE the representative groups listed each have a single vote. Decisions within a group about how that vote is to be cast do not require unanimity. Each group is to regulate its own proceedings, including provision for resolving deadlock. Co-opted members do not have a vote.
