Health Emergencies

Ambulance on the road

Most people at some point in their lives come up against some sort of emergency or crisis situation. If you have an emergency and don't know who to contact, but know that something has to be done now, use this page for information, contacts and out of hours services.

Visit the NHS Choices website for contact details and directions to the hospital closest to you.

I need the emergency services

For a general (serious) emergency dial 999 for Fire, Police, Ambulance or Coastguard services. Ask the operator for the service you require and give the number you are calling from. Wait for the emergency service to answer. Give the address where help is needed and any other necessary information.

To help you decide if you are dealing with a 'serious' situation, visit the NHS Direct website for further guidance.

Should I contact NHS Direct?

If you are unsure whether to call for an ambulance, or if you need some health advice out of hours when you cannot contact your own doctor or local pharmacist, call NHS Direct first on 0845 46 47. Their trained nurses can give advice on any health concern that you have and can recommend whether an ambulance should be called.

I need a late night chemist / pharmacist

Pharmacists (sometimes called Chemists) are experts in medicines and how they work. They play a key role in providing quality healthcare to patients.

They dispense your prescriptions, provide a range of services related to specific health issues and can offer advice on healthy living and minor ailments.

Use the NHS Pharmacy Search to find where you local Pharmacy is located, when they are open and the services that they provide.

I need to find a dentist

Dentists provide regular check ups on your teeth and gums. Part of their work involves teaching people to look after their teeth and gums in order to prevent problems. It also includes restoration of teeth damaged or lost by decay, trauma or other reasons, using a wide variety of techniques and materials.

Dental practices can take private and NHS patients, and most practices take a mixture of both. It is important to ring your Dentist to confirm the services that they provide and to make appointments.

Use the NHS Dentist Search to find where you local Dentist is located, when they are open and the services that they provide.

I need an 'out of hours' doctor

In the first instance, telephone your local GP surgery who will usually have recorded information on who to contact in an emergency.

Failing that, telephone NHS Direct on 0845 46 47. They can offer clinical advice over the phone or consultations at 3 Primary Care centers.

If you don't have your surgery contact details to hand, you can find them here.

I think my baby is ill

Although parents can usually tell if there is something the matter with their baby, sometimes it can be hard to tell.
