What are archives?
Archives are the records created by organisations and individuals during the course of their daily life and work.
Archives can be letters, diaries, minute books, account books, registers, photographs, maps, plans, prints, technical drawings, audio tapes, videos or computer databases.
Archives are kept because they provide evidence about the past. They are used by people who are interested in the history of their family, a building or a community.
They are used in education by school children and students. They are also used for official and legal purposes.
