Archives and Local Studies Services

Parchment sample held in Archives

You can visit the Archives and Local Studies Service in the Treasure House  and look at the archives, books and objects in our collections for no charge.  There are some services that we make a charge for.

Tours and Talks

A visit to the Treasure House can make an interesting outing for a local group, especially for anybody with an interest in local history or heritage.

We can give tours of the Treasure House building. We can show you a selection of archives or local studies items and show you behind the scenes.

We can come out and give talks to your group about the Treasure House and about the work that we do as an Archives and Local Studies Service.

We do make a charge for tours and talks. Please contact us for more information.

Copying Services

You can get copies from microfilm and microfiche from the self service printer in the research room.

You can copy books on the open shelves on the self service copier in the research room. You can also get print-outs from the public computers in the research room.

We can copy original documents for you. We copy archives for you because our staff are trained in handling the documents. You can get A4 and A3 black and white or colour copies. We can also scan documents for you.

You can get copies from the East Riding Register of Deeds. These copies can be certified if you need them for legal reasons. This means that they are stamped and signed as being a true copy.

The copying services provided by us must comply with copyright law.  Copyright law is complex.  You are entitled to single copies for personal study. You will be asked to fill in an order form and copyright declaration. This is a signed statement that you have received a single copy for private use and that you will not make any further copies without permission.

If you want to publish a document then you will need to write to the Archives and Local Studies Manager to get permission to do this. We will give you advice on copyright and write to depositors for their permission if that is needed. You will be surprised that many of our documents, even those that are 100s of years old, are often still in copyright.

We do need to look after documents carefully and will not copy them if they are fragile or copying will damage them. For more information about what we will not copy see the notes below.

Research Service

We provide a limited research service for people who cannot make a personal visit.

For a charge of £12, payable in advance, we will carry out limited searches for you if you can provide us with details of names, places and a range of dates that you want us to check.

We limit the time that we spend on these searches to half an hour.  See the form below for more information on our research service.  Details of our Research Service. [word: 471kb]

We do not do long or open-ended searches. If you need a longer search we advise you to use  an independent record agent. A list of local record searchers is available on request.
