Documents Online

The National Lottery logo

We are delighted to offer online access to digital copies of some of our archives.

This is a new service made possible by grants from the Heritage Lottery Fund towards two Archives 4 All projects.  These were part of a programme of projects supported by The National Archives that helped to encourage new ways for people to see archives. All Archives 4 All projects finished in March 2008

The East Riding Archives and Local Studies Service got funding for two projects: 'Blood, Thunder and High Society' and 'Rural Roots'.

The 'Blood, Thunder and High Society' project enabled us to catalogue the family and estate papers of the Strickland-Constable family of Wassand Hall near Hornsea and create an exhibition. The 'Rural Roots' project enabled us to fund a project outreach officer to work with three rural communities – Bolton, Easington and North Newbald.

Both projects enabled us to make digital copies of documents in our collections so that they can be seen online. There are about 1,500 images available online for each project.

The projects gave us the chance to develop our catalogue so that it can show images of actual documents. Only a small number of items in the catalogue have images linked to them at the moment.

How do I find Documents Online?

Documents online can be found in the following ways:

When you are searching the catalogue if you see a green tick in the column titled 'thumbnail' this means that there is an image linked to this catalogue item.  You will then need to click on the number highlighted green in the left hand column.  This displays the full catalogue entry for the item.  You then need to click on the URL address, which is also highlighted in green.  This will open up a new screen with thumbnails of images of documents.  Click on these thumbnails to enlarge them and move from image to image.

If you want to find all of the documents online for the 'Blood, Thunder and High Society' and 'Rural Roots' projects you can go to our catalogue search page and enter 'bloodandthunder' or 'ruralroots' into the 'any text' box as a search.  The results you get will contain all of the catalogue items for each project that link to digital copies.
