About school support and information

SPD - School Support

Physical education and school sport plays an important role in the development of young people. It improves self confidence, self discipline and concentration as well as the development of leadership potential and teamwork skills. It leads to healthier lifestyles and gives young people the chance to test themselves in a variety of competitive environments.

The schools and young people team are able to offer a high quality advice, support and information service to all East Riding of Yorkshire schools on all aspects of physical education and school sport. Working with East Riding of Yorkshire Council`s School Improvement Service, the schools and young people team lead a variety of strategic and ongoing programme areas to enhance opportunities in the development of physical education and school sport in the Authority.

The team has a number of projects ongoing at any one time and these achieve a number of objectives which improve physical education in the area.

These objectives include:

  • Increasing pupils participation in physical education and school sport

  • Improving the quality of teaching and raising the standards of teachers and those delivering in schools including teachers, dinner supervisors and adults other than teachers

  • Reacting positively and professionally to all enquiries for advice and support on all aspects relating to the physical education curriculum and to school sport activities

  • Improving pupils attitudes to learning and increasing their achievement

  • Increasing pupils participation in physical activity both in and out of school

  • Manage, encourage and monitor community use of school sites

The Sport and Play Development Service have an additional website dedicated to PE and School Sport based within the LEA's teachers and learner website: www.eriding.net  The PE and School Sport website is divided into both a teacher and pupil section and provides a useful resource for all East Riding schools.

  • The teachers section is dedicated to teaching and learning issues relating to PE and school sport.  It has updates on health and safety information as well as courses and up and coming initiatives that are being developed.

  • The pupils section contains lots of information including courses and careers in sport, rules of sports and fun games.
