Community Sports Coaches

The Community Sports Coach (CSC) scheme is a national scheme, developed by Sport England and Sports Coach UK.  The aim of the scheme is to ensure that a number of qualified CSCs are working at local level, to increase the number and range of coaching opportunities according to strategic and local need.

In the Humber there has been a £1.6 million investment into local sports coaching across the region. Over 23 coaches have been appointed to work with the local community in a range of projects in settings across the four local authorities.

The four local authorities within the Humber each submitted bids, coordinated by the Humber Sports Partnership, to Sport England and were successful in securing the funding for a range of projects.

The East Riding of Yorkshire Sport and Play Development Service have appointed four full time CSCs to deliver a wide range of activities with the aim of increasing participation and widening access within sport and physical activity opportunities.

All posts are predominantly multi sport, delivered with a second specialism, which coach both young people and adults within schools, clubs and community settings.

The four CSCs deliver multi-skill coaching sessions, but each post has a second specialism:

  • Disability –Chris Johnson

  • Healthy Lifestyles – Rob Lever

  • Outdoor Pursuits – Brian Bate

  • Street Sports – Ed Grady

Following the formation of the Sport and Active Recreation Strategy, "Yes, Be Active Here", it was discovered that we needed further development work specifically around the coastal strip and rural areas of the East Riding. A successful bid was written to the Sport England Community Investment Fund (CIF) to fund two more CSCs – rural and coastal:

  • Coastal – Paul Silvester

  • Rural – Sam James

This now means that there is a team of six CSCs who are delivering community led programmes throughout all areas of the East Riding.

What do the CSCs do?

Each CSC has their own tailored structured work programme which is developed with key partnership involvement.

Our key partners include South Hunsley School Sport Partnership, Bridlington School Sports Partnership, Extended Services, the Tribune Trust, Positive FuturesSafe Communities, East Riding of Yorkshire NHS, Humberside Police, local National Governing Bodies representatives and various voluntary and community groups e.g. the W.I and Stroke Association
