Waste Factfile

Recycling collection - household

There are obvious advantages to waste recycling, energy savings, and reduced impact on the environment. However, there are other concerns too:

  • The financial cost of collecting the recyclable materials.
  • The need to find local outlets so that we don't burden the environment with more transport.

It is important to ensure that the environmental benefits outweigh the environmental costs of running any scheme.

  • In the East Riding, we produced over 204,205 tonnes of waste in 2004/05
  • Each household produces 1.44 tonnes of waste each year.
  • Up to 80% of our waste can be reused, recovered or recycled.
  • Every tonne of glass recycled saves 1.2 tonnes of raw materials and the equivalent of 30 gallons of oil energy.
  • One ton of paper from recycled pulp saves 17 trees, 3 cubic yards of landfill space, 7,000 gallons of water, 4200 kWh (enough to heat a home for half a year), 390 gallons of oil, and prevents 60 pounds of air pollutants.
  • Junk mail can be stopped by calling 02072913310.
