Port side view of a two masted black hulled vessel carrying eight sails and flying a burgee, the Red Ensign and four signal flags. Other sailing vessels are in the background to the right and on the left the needles (Cornwall) are seen. A two masted sailing coaster, the 'Rival' was built about 1869. The vessel is shown here off the Needles, near the Isle of Wight. Her crew of 4 are on deck and she is flying her International Code Signal flags - VJTN. The 'Rival' was stranded and lost in the Bristol Channel in 1911, but the crew were saved. Dull gilt wood frame.
