Registering births, marriages and deaths

Births Marriages Deaths

Here at the East Riding Registration Service we would like to make registering a birth, marriage or death as easy as possible by giving you all the information you require.

Births

Congratulations... on the birth of your baby

You must register the birth of your child within 42 days of the birth.you may register at any of the Registration Offices throughout the East Riding area. If you decide to register at any other Register Office in England and Wales you will need to make what is called a 'declaration'; in this case a certificate will be sent to you in the post. Please note there is an appointment system in all offices

The mother of the child can automatically register the birth, the father can only do so if you were married at the time of the birth unless:

  • you both attend in person at the Registration Office
  • he makes a statutory declaration of his paternity, using the official form obtainable from us
  • there is a court order in force or a parental responsibility agreement

What documents and information do I need to register a birth?

For the baby

  • the date and place of the baby's birth (time, if a multiple birth)
  • the sex of the baby
  • the forenames and surname of the baby

For the mother

  • your forenames and surname, your maiden name if you are, or, ever have been married

  • if you are married, the date of your marriage
  • the number of previous children by your present husband or former husband

For the father

  • your forenames and surname
  • your date and place of birth
  • your occupation at the time or any time prior to the birth
  • if married, the date of your marriage

Fees

  • a short birth certificate is issued free of charge
  • a full birth certificate is £3.50
  • please note we can only accept cash or cheques for transactions of less than £7

Marriages

Congratulations... on your forthcoming marriage

The following places have been officially registered for marriages:

  • A register office
  • Rooms in registration offices
  • An approved building
  • A place of religious worship in your district of residence or one outside the district, which one of you uses as a place of worship.

The Church of England and the Church of Wales are able to issue their own paperwork. People from other religions must come to the register office to give notice of their Marriage.

If you want a civil ceremony and you live in the East Riding, then you must each give notice in person at the Registration office of your choice. This needs to be done not more than 12 months before the wedding. Please note that an appointment system is in operation at all offices.

When you arrive to give notice of your marriage, the Registrar will ask you to sign a legal declaration that the details in the notice are correct. If you sign your name to false information you may find yourself the subject of a legal investigation and possibly prosecution.

What documents and information do I need to give notice of a marriage?

  • Proof of identity: This could be passports.
  • Proof of residence: In the absence of a passport proof of name in use can be verified by the production of a birth certificate plus a further document e.g. driving licence, medical card, council tax bill or utility bill.
  • Consent must be obtained if you are under 18 years of age.
  • If you have been married before: bring a document to show the marriage has ended, a death certificate or a decree absolute if you are divorced
  • the appropriate fee.

If any documents are in a language other than English, you will need to get these translated before giving them to the Superintendent Registrar. They will be submitted to the Registrar General for verification.

Deaths

With deepest sympathy... on your sad loss

When someone dies in the East Riding then the death must be registered within five days unless a coroner is involved. This can be done by making an appointment with us. If you decide to register at another Register Office in England and Wales outside of the district, then you will need to make what is called a declaration; you will need to produce a medical certificate indicating the cause of death. Please note that there is an appointment system in all offices.

Who can register a death?

  • A relative of the deceased
  • Any adult who was present at the death
  • The person who instructs the undertaker about the funeral

The information you provide lets us produce the death certificate, compile statistics of deaths nationally and in the East Riding area and forward information to various departments according to the Births and Deaths Regulations Act.

What documents and information do I need to provide to register a death?

  • Medical certificate of death issued by a doctor, unless a coroner is involved.
  • When and where the death happened.
  • The full name and usual address of the deceased person.
  • The person's maiden name in the case of a married woman.
  • The deceased person's date and place of birth.
  • The deceased person's occupation and details of any pensions.
  • If the deceased person is a married woman or a widow, her husband's name and occupation.
  • The deceased person's medical card or NHS number.

There is no charge for registering a death. Free notifications will be given to you for use by the undertaker and for the Department of Social Security. Death certificates are available at a cost of £3.50 each (photocopies are not acceptable). We can only accept cash and cheques for transactions of less than £7.
