The council provides a range of services to help deal with winter conditions.
These range from the precautionary salting of the more heavily trafficked roads to snow clearance, the provision of boxes of salt in built-up areas and salt heaps on rural roads.
Footpaths in certain urban locations will be salted at times of extreme weather conditions.
If you would like to send a request or comment, please complete the Winter Service contact form.
In the event of a major snowfall the council will concentrate its efforts on keeping the "defined network" open. Snow clearing will be tackled in order of priority as follows:
- Major roads between cities and large towns on the 'defined network'.
- Distributor roads leading to the "defined network" from the smaller towns and villages.
- All remaining routes and attending to emergencies on unclassified roads.
- Footways will only be cleared in main shopping areas and busy urban areas when resources become available and the roads are open and safe.

Facilities available
East Riding of Yorkshire Council's fleet of salt spreaders and snow-ploughs is prepared for the onset of freezing conditions. We use up to 21 gritters to spread between 160 and 320 Tonnes of salt on each turnout. The total used in a year is approximately 16,000 Tonnes, costing around £1.4 million.
Thousands of tonnes of salt are stockpiled ready to treat hundreds of miles of roads as the temperatures drop but the council's winter services team is reminding motorists to drive according to the conditions and only to make essential journeys.
The salt spreaders are the most visual aspect of our winter service, which nowadays utilises an extensive behind the scenes operation. Some of this has become more scientific involving satellite images, weather stations and thermal mapping techniques. This complimented by our personnel engaged in fleet management, control and scouting duties ensure the East Riding's roads are as safe as possible.
Weather stations are located around the East Riding, automatically measuring road surface temperatures, rainfall, wind speed, humidity and salt levels on the roads.
"Scouts" are used when conditions are variable and are called upon to drive the network monitoring temperatures and inspecting the roads for the presence of ice, snow or water.
Each winter we publish a map showing the 'defined network' of roads on which precautionary salting will be carried out. This is sent to all residents and businesses via East Riding News.
