Safety Cameras are Working - It's Official!

A massive 53% reduction in the number of people killed or seriously injured at Humberside Safety Camera Partnership's mobile camera sites is official confirmation that safety cameras are working.

Mobile safety cameras operate at the 68 worst crash sites around the region where in the past an average of 72 people were killed or seriously injured at these sites each year. However, during the past year regular speed enforcement has taken place at these sites and the number of people killed or seriously injured has dropped to 34.

Ruth Gore spokesperson for the Partnership commented: "This is a great result for the Humberside Safety Camera Partnership and clearly shows that safety cameras are having an effect on reducing casualties and collisions on our region's roads. We realise that this represents just one year's results and it's normal to review the type of information over three years. We were expecting a reduction in casualties and collisions based upon the experience of other Camera Partnerships that have been operating over a longer period. The fact that we have seen such a dramatic reduction in casualties within our first year is fantastic, however we are not complacent."

She continued: "There have still been 34 people killed or seriously injured during the year at safety camera sites and the Partnership constantly monitors operations very closely to see what else can be done to further reduce these figures. The Partnership will be releasing a more detailed report on its first year of operation later in the summer."

The Partnership is now announcing seventeen new safety cameras sites across the region where enforcement will start to take place over the coming months. The sites all have a history of crashes, casualties and speeding motorists, and comply fully with the rules and guidance laid down by Government.

East Riding

  • A new fixed camera site will be located on the 40mph section of the B1239 North of Preston and this will be the East Riding's first fixed camera site. This 750 metre short section of road has been the scene of eight crashes in which three crashes resulted in death or serious injury. The crashes were clustered together and this site is more suited to fixed camera enforcement.

Mobile safety camera enforcement vans will be enforcing the 60mph speed limit on the A614 near Shiptonthorpe.

  • A614 north of the Shiptonthorpe roundabout has been a scene of eight crashes where people have been injured, in which three crashes resulted in death or serious injury.
  • A614 South of Shiptonthorpe has been the scene of five crashes where people have been injured, in which three crashes resulted in death or serious injury.

In both these sites the crashes were scattered along the route rather than clustered together and the sites are more suited to mobile enforcement.

Hull City

Fixed safety cameras will be installed on the following roads over the coming months. All these sites are less than a kilometre in length and have seen the crashes clustered together and are more suited to fixed camera enforcement:

  • Clough Road (Beverley Road to Vulcan Street) has been the scene of 17 crashes where people have been injured, in which five crashes resulted in death or serious injury. This section of road has a 30mph speed limit.
  • Beverley Road (A1079) (Mizzen Road to Downfield Avenue) has been the scene of 6 crashes where people have been injured, in which three crashes resulted in death or serious injury. This section of road has a 40mph speed limit.
  • Spring Bank West (Princes Avenue to Chanterlands Avenue) has been the scene of 24 crashes where people have been injured, in which three crashes resulted in death or serious injury. This section of road has a 30mph speed limit.

The mobile safety camera enforcement vans will be enforcing the 30mph speed limit on the following roads:

  • Bricknell Avenue (National Avenue to Strathcona Avenue) has been the scene of five crashes where people have been injured, in which two crashes resulted in death or serious injury
  • Anlaby Road (Trenton Avenue to Belgrave Drive) has been the scene of 17 crashes where people have been injured, in which two crashes resulted in death or serious injury
  • Greenwood Avenue (1st Avenue to Ellerburn Avenue) has been the scene of 17 crashes where people have been injured, in which four crashes resulted in death or serious injury
  • Saltshouse Road (Middlesex Road to East Mount Road) has been the scene of five crashes where people have been injured, in which two crashes resulted in death or serious injury.

In all these sites the crashes were scattered along the route rather than clustered together and are more suited to mobile enforcement.

North East Lincolnshire

The mobile safety camera enforcement vans will be enforcing the 30mph speed limit on the following roads:

  • Cromwell Road, Grimsby has been the scene of 14 crashes where people have been injured, in which three crashes resulted in death or serious injury
  • Pelham Road, Immingham has been the scene of 19 crashes where people have been injured, in which three crashes resulted in death or serious injury

In all these sites the crashes were scattered along the route rather than clustered together and are more suited to mobile enforcement.

North Lincolnshire

The mobile safety camera enforcement vans will be enforcing the 30mph speed limit on the following roads. In all these sites the crashes were scattered along the route rather than clustered together and are more suited to mobile enforcement.

  • A161 Belton has been the scene of eight crashes where people have been injured, in which two crashes resulted in death or serious injury
  • A1077 Barton has been the scene of seven crashes where people have been injured, in which two crashes resulted in death or serious injury
  • Ashby Road near Pittwood has been the scene of 15 crashes where people have been injured, in which two crashes resulted in death or serious injury
  • Luneburg Way Scunthorpe has been the scene of seven crashes where people have been injured, in which two crashes resulted in death or serious injury
  • The final safety camera site in North Lincolnshire will be at Queensway, Scunthorpe; a 40mph section of road that has been the scene of 24 crashes where people have been injured, in which two crashes resulted in death or serious injury
