Humberside Safety Camera Partnership highlights the worst crash sites in your area - East Riding

Statistics released by Humberside Safety Camera Partnership show that the areas of the East Riding of Yorkshire with the highest incidence of serious injury and fatal collisions are also the areas where a high proportion of motorists flout the speed limit.

The figures highlight in shocking detail why Humberside Safety Camera Partnership is trying to reduce speed at known collision hot-spots across the former Humberside region.

Among the areas with the worst records are the A1174 at Woodmansey (a 30mph zone), where people were injured in 24 different crashes and five individuals people were killed or seriously injured. Despite this, a massive 78 per cent of traffic exceeded the speed limit.

One the A1079 at Barmby Moor (a 50mph zone), five people were killed or seriously injured between 1999 and 2001. Astonishingly, during the same period 50 per cent of the traffic travelling along this stretch of road exceeded the speed limit.

Other problem areas were:

  • The B1230 at Newport (a 40mph zone), where there were 12 injury collisions and four people were killed or seriously injured. 19 per cent of the traffic exceeded the speed limit.
  • Main Road at Bilton (a 30mph zone), where there were 19 injury collisions and three people were killed or seriously injured. A massive 75 per cent of the traffic exceeded the speed limit.
  • The A165 at Skirlaugh (a 30mph zone), where there were five injury crashes and four people were killed or seriously injured. 72 per cent of traffic exceeded the speed limit.
  • The A165 at Coniston (a 40 mph zone), where there were 14 injury crashes and four people were killed or seriously injured, including one child. 52 per cent of traffic exceeded the speed limit.
  • Airmyn Road in Goole (a 30mph zone), where there were 18 injury crashes and 3 people were killed or seriously injured. 60 per cent of traffic exceeded the speed limit.
  • Rolston Road in Hornsea (a 30mph zone), where there were 13 injury crashes and four people were killed or seriously injured, including one child. 74 per cent of the traffic exceeded the speed limit.
  • The A614 at Holme on Spalding Moor (a 40mph zone), where there were 11 injury accidents and five people were killed or seriously injured, including a child. 29 per cent of traffic exceeded the speed limit.

Andrew Milner, East Riding of Yorkshire Council’s representative on the Humberside Safety Camera Partnership Board, commented: “All of the sites where we use safety cameras have a history of collisions and excessive speed, but the statistics for some of these sites are particularly shocking.

“No-one wants the knowledge that they have killed someone on their conscience for the rest of their lives, so please slow down and help us to make sure that no more lives are lost to speed.
