Saving Motorbikers Lives
A special campaign aimed at reducing the high number of motorbikers killed on the region's roads during the summer months is being carried out by Humberside Safety Camera Partnership along with Humberside Police and Roadaware Partnership.
Ten motorcyclists were killed in the Humberside region last year, 146 were seriously injured and 285 were slightly injured, a number deemed by many as being far too high.
To reduce this number a three-staged approach is being made by the agencies involved. Training and advice is being offered through the free Bike Safe events happening around the region between now and September. The scheme is already proving to be a great success with 42 bikers being involved in the first Bike Safe event. Bikers can still book themselves onto one of the free events by ringing 07989 396795.
Motorcyclists are also being stopped by the police and offered on the spot advice about inappropriate riding or issued notices for vehicle defects.
The Humberside Safety Camera Partnership in response to the number of motorcycle casualties will undertake covert speed enforcement during the summer months concentrating on those travelling at high speed.
Mick Harris the project manager commented “Covert speed enforcement is just a small part of a wider strategy to reduce the number of motorcycle deaths within our region. We prefer education but where that fails our officers will be enforcing at the times and places when we have a recognised problem with high-speed bikers. In recent years motorcyclists have been recorded at speeds up to 140mph. This is unacceptable on our roads. We therefore are forced to try different methods to detect this insane minority”
He continued, “The majority of motorcyclists ride sensibly and are a credit to other road users. Some destroy that trust by travelling at very high speeds. We hope that bikers, who are a particular vulnerable group, think twice before riding around our region at excessive speed, putting their own and others lives at risk. We ask them to think of the impact that a serious crash would have on their own and others families. Our over riding message to them is Slow Down.”
