58% of motorists feel under pressure to break speed limit
58 per cent of motorists say that they sometimes feel pressured to exceed the speed limit according to new research commissioned by Humberside Safety Camera Partnership.
This worrying trend was uncovered when an independent MORI North telephone survey was conducted among 1,000 people living in the East Riding, Hull, North Lincolnshire and North East Lincolnshire areas in September, 2003.
It was a particular concern for older drivers, with 65 per cent of respondents over 65 years saying that they sometimes feel pressured into speeding to keep up with the flow of traffic.
However, it does appear that the use of safety cameras in the former Humberside area has had an impact on peoples’ attitudes towards speeding - 74 per cent of those surveyed said that pay more attention to their speed now than they did two years ago.
Ruth Gore, Marketing and Communication Officer for Humberside Safety Camera Partnership, commented: “It’s great news that three quarters of those surveyed are generally more aware of the need to abide by the speed limit and are paying more attention to their driving.
“However it’s very worrying that so many drivers are still feeling under pressure to speed to keep up with the rest of the traffic. Clearly some motorists are still choosing to ignore the speed limit and posing problems for law-abiding drivers. We would remind people that the consequences of exceeding the speed limit could be losing their licence, and potentially their job and their home, or, even more seriously, risking seriously injuring or even killing themselves or someone else.”
