Sewerby Parks and Gardens
Bridlington Outreach
Within the East Riding of Yorkshire council, Social Services have a variety of outreach projects which focus on enabling people with learning disabilities of all ages to take their place in the life of the community. These services are delivered through day centres and outreach teams.
Sewerby Hall is home to an outreach centre, hosting approximately 30 adults with learning disabilities, from 18- 80yrs old from all over the East Riding area.
Using a horticultural environment individuals gain valuable training in all aspects of life within the community, including social, academic, work experience, leisure and therapeutics.
Sewerby Hall and Gardens serves as a great environment for this project providing the opportunity for those involved to interact with staff and visitors, thus improving their communication and numeric skills. As horticulture is a very therapeutic pastime, it also provides the chance to enjoy the work that they do, have fun and sell their produce!
This outreach centre has exceeded itself by becoming a person-centred, needs-led day service striving towards personal development and above all enjoyment. Development of this service also now means that it works closely with the community carrying out gardening contracts, benefiting both service users and local residents.
Our greenhouses exhibit a fantastic array of colours and fragrances from both plants and vegetables, most of which are available to buy.
To get access to this service and others, the customer service centre will make a referral to care management, who will then carry out a community care assessment to determine individual needs and requirements.
