Walter Goodin Above All, The Sky
The acclaimed Hull Museums touring exhibition of a major show of works by Hull-born and latterly Bridlington resident, Walter Goodin, will open the season at Sewerby Hall on Saturday 4th April 2009. The artist Walter Goodin (1907-1992) is best known for his panoramic paintings of the Wolds and the East Yorkshire coastline. This exhibition is the first ever appraisal of his work and brings together a selection of approximately 50 paintings and drawings, the majority of which have never been seen in public before. It explores not only his talent as a landscape artist but other aspects of his work which may not be so well-known. Highlights include his acclaimed still life 'Junk', scenes of working life in Beverley and Hull, such as 'Hodgson's Tannery' and much-loved and familiar paintings, including 'Bridlington Harbour' and 'The Flamborough Lifeboat'.
The exhibition is based on research by local art experts Wendy Loncaster and Malcolm Shields. Wendy is a well-respected expert on Goodin's mentor, Frederick William Elwell, and researched Elwell's life and work for the popular survey exhibition, 'A Life in Art', Ferens Art Gallery, 1993. Malcolm Shields is celebrated for his expertise on early English watercolours and the Hull School of painters. He was a personal friend of Walter Goodin.
Goodin's spectacular topographical landscapes and sea pieces are replete with his love of the Bridlington-Flamborough coast - and above all, the sky! The paintings can be viewed in the West Wing Gallery on the first floor of Sewerby Hall every day from 10am - 5pm; normal admission charges apply. Walter Goodin: Above All, the Sky will run from 4th April until 31st May 2009.
