Can I obtain residential or nursing home care without Social Services being involved?

If you have sufficient funds available from your own private means, you can make your own arrangements with a residential or nursing home. Homes may accept people for either short term breaks or for longer term care.

Alternatively, if you have less then £16,000 savings and your capital is tied up in your present home, it may be to your financial advantage to apply for Social Service benefits and make your own arrangements. You should seek independence advice

What if I want Social Services to arrange my residential or nursing home placement do I have to pay?

Yes, everyone has to contribute towards the cost of their care. Your contribution will be calculated using standard rules set nationally by the Department of Health. To allow the council to calculate your contribution, you will be asked to complete a form; your social worker will assist you with this if you need help.

The council will decide how much care will cost. It will then enter into a contract with the home that is to provide your care. You pay the assessed contribution directly to the home.

How can I be sure about the quality of my care home?

Residential establishments by law, have to be registered and inspected to ensure they meet basic standards. However, in addition, the council encourages local residential and nursing home to work to quality standards by promoting the council's quality development scheme. This scheme assesses standards of personalised care, staff development, training and quality assurance. Only those establishments who meet the council's criteria gain an award under the scheme.
