New records for old glass
== Mon 14th January ==
East Riding residents have shattered yet another record for the amount of glass they are recycling at bring sites.
Figures just released by East Riding of Yorkshire Council show that 20 per cent more glass was recycled at bring sites last month than in December 2006.
Councillor Symon Fraser, the council’s portfolio holder for the environment, said: “But it wasn’t just in December our residents broke records. Every month since last April our residents have recycled more glass at the sites than in the comparable months in 2006.”
He added: “These big increases are partly due to the council providing glass banks at a further eight sites over the past 12 months.
“But all credit to our residents because the average amount recycled at each bank has shot up to 2.58 tonnes from 2.16 tonnes. That’s a whole lot of glass that is no longer being dumped in landfills proving once again the commitment of East Riding residents to their environment.”
Last month, 307 tonnes of glass were recycled across the East Riding’s 140 bring sites compared with 244 tonnes in December 2006, and shows a huge improvement on the111 tonnes recycled in December 2001.
The council puts its bring sites in easily assessable places like supermarket car parks so that residents can do their recycling while shopping.
The glass recycling tonnages from April 2007 compared with 2006 are:
| Month | 2007 |
2006 |
|---|---|---|
| April | 264 |
211 |
| May | 236 |
224 |
| June | 297 |
246 |
| July | 284 |
239 |
| August | 305 |
248 |
| September | 249 |
229 |
| October | 252 |
228 |
| November | 249 |
222 |
The glass tonnages count towards the council’s Target 45+ campaign to encourage East Riding residents to recycle at least 45 per cent of their household waste.
Failure to meet this target by 2010 could result in the council facing government and EU imposed fines and penalties of up to £9million that could have an effect services.
