Reduce, reuse & recycle
Reducing, reusing and recycling is also often referred to as the 3R's principle:
- Reduce - reduce the amount of rubbish you create
- Reuse - reuse items such as carrier bags, glass jars etc
- Recycle - recycle as much of your waste as possible by using your kerbside scheme, your local household waste recycling site, and bring sites.
Reducing waste saves both materials and energy, and removes the need and expense of disposal. You can reduce waste by not buying disposable items, choosing items with less packaging, refusing unnecessary shopping bags and stopping junk mail.

Reusing reduces the need to buy new items and so saves resources. You can reduce waste by choosing reusable containers rather than disposable ones, giving old clothes and bric-a-brac to charity shops and jumble sales, taking your own bags for shopping and buying milk from your local milkman.

Recycling saves valuable raw materials, and cuts down waste collection and disposal costs. When all efforts to reduce or reuse your waste have been made, then aim to recycle as much of what's left as possible. You can recycle paper, glass, cardboard, cans, textiles, books, oil, scrap metal, batteries and garden waste at our household waste recycling sites and bring sites across the area.
