Car Parking Review Panel

A series of roadshows across the East Riding about proposed car parking arrangements is now nearing completion and the last event will be held this Thursday, 11 June, at Cottingham Civic Hall (4.30pm – 7pm).

The roadshows have given residents a chance to discuss with councillors the plans outlined in the car parking review panel report.

The panel’s proposals include reducing tariffs at many council owned car parks which already charge and introducing charges to a number of car parks that are currently free.

Councillor Felicity Temple, chairman of the review panel, said: “As a panel we were determined that our proposals were not to simply raise revenue.  Having said that, maintenance, business rates and enforcement on each car parking space has to be paid for somehow and at the moment half the county are paying for all the spaces.  This is demonstrably not a fair situation and is a legacy from the previous boroughs and their different policies.

"We had suggested that we introduce charges at the lowest possible level, i.e. 50p for one hour, or the equivalent of £1 for all day with an annual permit.  This we felt would not be unreasonable, given that last year we raised charges in Bridlington, Beverley etc., by 40p per hour and there the daily charge is over £3.

"However, the economic climate has cast its shadow and we are now asking the public through a series of nine roadshows if they can suggest an alternative way of covering the costs."

The consultation concludes at the end of June and it will then be a matter for the review panel to look again at its proposals in the light of responses and for any decisions to change arrangements to be made in due course by the cabinet and Full Council.
