Story
The next exhibition at Goole Museum is entitled 'Barnes Wallis: the Yorkshire coonection and beyond' and will run from 10 December until 30 January 2010 (it will be formally opened by the vice chairman of East Riding of Yorkshire Council, Councillor David Rudd, at 2pm on Thursday, 10 December).

Barnes Wallis (1887 - 1979) was arguably one of the greatest inventive geniuses of the 20th century.  Widely celebrated for his wartime work on the Wellington bomber and the so-called 'bouncing bomb' used on the 'Dambusters' raid on the Ruhr dams, his other successes have often been overlooked.  During the mid-1920s, Barnes Wallis was based at Howden, working on the successful R100 airship project there. The Yorkshire Howden connection is the starting point for this exhibition, which also covers not only his military work, but his subsequent investigations into supersonic flight, and projects as diverse as the Parkes Telescope in Australia, de-icing systems for Arctic trawlers, and lightweight calipers for polio victims.

The exhibition is a collaboration between the Yorkshire-based Barnes Wallis Memorial Trust and East Riding of Yorkshire Museums, and is funded by the Royal Society (of which Barnes Wallis was a Fellow) as part of its Local Heroes programme.  There will be a programme of associated events with the exhibition.

Goole Museum is on the first floor above Goole Library in Carlisle Street.  There is lift access for visitors.
