AdminHistoryThe manor of Upper Helmsley, near Stamford Bridge, was originally the property of the Helmsley family and remained so until Edward Thweng took possession through marriage to the heiress in the early 14th century. In 1605 a new family gained ownership of the manor when George Wilmer, esquire, married Margaret Thweng. Joshua Field of Heaton, near Bradford, later acquired the estate with his marriage to Mary Wilmer, daughter of Randall Wilmer, esquire, in the late 18th century, though full possession was not obtained until 1804. Joshua Francis Whittell inherited the manor in 1863 through the marriage of his mother, Mary Ann Wilmer, the heiress, to Eugene Thomas Whittell. Ownership of the estate did not however remain for long under the Whittell family name. Anna Maria, the daughter and heiress of Joshua Francis Whittell, married Colonel George Edward Herbert of Glanhafren, Montgomeryshire, Wales, around [1860] and succeeded to the estate following Joshua's death in 1867. Colonel Herbert, born in 1810, was part of a wealthy land owning family from Wales. In 1876 he acquired yet more land when the Glanhafren estate was bequeathed to him through the will of his brother, Reverend John Arthur Herbert, who died without issue. Edward Arthur Field Whittell Herbert, the son of George Edward and Anna Maria Herbert, later inherited both of these estates after his father's death in [1892]. The Upper Helmsley estate still remains with the Herbert family. Sources: Victoria County History, 'A History of the County of York North Riding: Volume 2' (1923), edited by William Page.
