AdminHistoryThe Small School at Red House Ltd. was a charity which ran two residential schools for troubled children in the UK for a number of years. In November 1996 the Charity Commission suspended the then trustees, following concerns raised by the Royal Danish Ministry of Education about similar schools in Denmark. A Receiver and Manager was appointed to investigate the affairs of the Charity and the management of both schools in the UK. As a result the Board of Trustees was removed in May 1997, and a new Board of Trustees was appointed. However after meetings were held with East Riding Registration and Inspection Unit and the HMI, who had just completed an inspection of both schools, the DfEE advised the Trustees on 18 December 1997 'that the pupils on both sites are at risk given that their health, safety and welfare cannot be guaranteed.' The Trustees advised the Charity Commission on 18 December 1997 that the schools could not be maintained in the present climate. The Charity Commission issued an Order on 23 December 1997 appointing a Receiver and Manager. The first phase of the Receiver Manager's work was to assess the continued operation and viability of the schools. When he concluded, after consultation with the regulatory bodies and placing agencies, that the schools could not continue, a further order was made on 31 December 1997 authorising him to close the schools. The Charity Commission handed back control over the remaining assets of the Small School at Red House to the Trustees on 10 February 2000. The Trustees changed the name of the charity to the Social Education Trust with the approval of Companies House on 20 March 2000. The Social Education Trust was responsible for transferring these records and also provided background information about the Charity. The Social Education Trust itself had ceased to exist by the end of 2007.
