This page is for people who may need to pay for their own adult social care, sometimes called ‘self-funding’. It explains what self-funding means, what support is available, and the next steps to help you arrange and plan your care with confidence.

When you may need to pay for your own care

Some people qualify for financial help from the council towards the cost of their care. Others may need to pay for some or all of their care themselves. This is known as self-funding.

Whether you are planning ahead, arranging support urgently, or helping a family member make decisions, we are here to help you understand your options and what to do next.

How care funding is worked out

The amount you pay towards your care depends on your financial situation, including things like:

• savings and investments
• income
• property or other assets.

If your savings and assets are above the government threshold of £23,250, you will need to pay for your own care.

If you are unsure about whether this applies to you, you can complete a financial assessment to find out if you qualify for financial help from the council for your care. If you do not wish to share your information with the council or choose not to complete a financial assessment, you will need to self-fund your care.

Even if you are paying for your own care, you can still get support with understanding what care you need. You do not have to manage everything on your own.

• planning how you will pay for your care now and in the future.
