If you own your own home, you could make some changes to your home to help you manage everyday tasks and stay independent. This is often referred to as ‘home adaptations’.

Please note: if you live in a rented property, you may still be able to make these changes but you'll need your landlord's permission.

Types of home adaptations

Making changes to your home to install new equipment or make spaces easier to use is known as making adaptations.

Minor adaptations are smaller changes that are easily made by a family member or tradesperson, such as adding grab rails or lever taps. These are usually fairly low cost, and are quick to install.

Other changes such as adding a stairlift, wheelchair access ramp or amending home layouts are larger projects that are known as major adaptations.
