From 1 April 2008 onwards if a property is unoccupied, an unoccupied rate is payable. The current unoccupied rate is a charge equal to 100 per cent of the full rates. This charge is payable after three months on commercial properties (for example shops, offices) or six months for industrial properties unless an exemption applies. Liability for the charge rests with the owner of the property.
