Do you need a license to provide hypnosis and how to apply and pay for hypnotism licence.

Do I need a licence to provide hypnotism?

Yes. If you want to have an exhibition, demonstration or performance of a hypnotist, you will need to complete an application under the terms of The Hypnotism Act 1952.

Hypnotism includes, mesmerism and any similar act or process which produces or is intended to produce in any person any form of induced sleep or trance in which the susceptibility of the mind of that person to suggestion or direction is increased or intended to be increased but does not include hypnotism, mesmerism or nay such similar act or process which is self induced.

The exhibition, demonstration or performance of hypnotism (otherwise than at or in connection with an entertainment) for scientific or research purposes or for the treatment of mental or physical disease is exempt under the Act. The need to gain authorisation does not also apply to an exhibition demonstration or performance of hypnotism that takes place in the course of a performance of a play (within the meaning of the Theatres Act 1968 or the Licensing Act 2003) given premises in respect of which a licence under those Acts are in force.

How do I apply for a hypnotism licence?

You may apply as long as you have not been previously refused or had withdrawn, a consent by any Licensing Authority or been convicted of an offence under the Hypnotism Act 1952 or of an offence involving the breach of a condition regulating or prohibiting the giving of a performance of hypnotism on any person at a place licensed for regulated entertainment under the Licensing Act 2003.

You will need to complete the online application form and submit it to the Licensing Team along with the fee of £25

Applications should be submitted 28 days before the planned event. You will need detail of your public liability insurance and the last 3 performances to complete the form.

Applicants must be over 18 years of age.

Once your application has been received by the licensing team they will contact you to arrange a suitable time to inspect the premises where the exhibition/demonstration or performance will take place. This is ensure that it will meet the requirements of The Hypnotism Act 1952.

You must be able to comply with the standard conditions attached to your consent.

Publicity

No poster, advertisement or programme of hypnotism which is likely to cause public offence shall be displayed, sold or supplied by or on behalf of the licensee either at the premises or elsewhere.

Every poster, advertisement or programme for the performance which is displayed, sold or supplied shall include, clearly and legibly, the following statement

'Volunteers, who must be aged 18 or over, can refuse at any point to continue taking part in the performance'
