Introduction

In the East Riding, the following sites have been formally determined as contaminated land under Part 2A of the Environmental Protection Act 1990:

• Woldgate landfill site, Bridlington
• Low Bransholme landfill site, Hull
• Burney Close/Copandale Road, Beverley (11 properties affected).

What counts as contaminated land

Under Part 2A of the Environmental Protection Act 1990, contaminated land is defined as land which appears to be in such a condition, by reason of substances in, on or under the land, that significant harm is being caused or is likely to be caused, or that controlled waters are being or are likely to be polluted.

In plain terms, this means that the land on the sites listed above is polluted seriously enough to pose a real risk to people, property or the environment.

What happens when a site is contaminated

When a site is determined as contaminated, we issue a remediation notice for that site. This informs the person responsible what actions must be taken to address the contamination.
