4.Team around the school

    Introduction

    If you feel your child needs additional support, or if their primary or secondary school has concerns, the school may suggest that you ask the team around the school (TAS) for help. This brings together people who know your child to talk about how best to help them.

    Who the team are

    A team around the school (TAS) is made up of professionals from different services who work together to support your child and family. They usually include:

    • staff from your child’s school
    • family help practitioners
    • education professionals
    • health professionals
    • any specialists relevant to your child’s needs.

    How it works

    Here is a step-by-step guide to how the team around the school (TAS) can work with you and your child to provide the right support.

    Fill in request form

    To start the process, your child’s school will fill in a team around the school (TAS) request form. This will include information about your child such as:

    • any worries you have
    • the things that work well
    • anything you may have already tried to address the issue
    • what you would like to happen.

    You will need to sign this form to confirm you are happy for this information to be shared at a team around the school (TAS) meeting.

    Checks and preparation

    Once the form is complete, the school and community practitioner will:

    • review the information in the TAS request form
    • carry out checks to make sure it is right to hold a TAS meeting
    • share the information with the other members of the team around the school so they can check their records for any relevant information to share at the TAS meeting.

    At the meeting

    During the meeting, everyone:

    • reviews the information you have given in the form
    • shares any information they have about your child
    • talks about the support they can offer
    • works together to decide the best support for you and your family.

    Plan of support

    After the meeting, your child’s school will contact you to explain the support options available from different partner services.

    You will then work together to create a plan, deciding which support to access and who will be involved.

    Your plan could include:

    • building a network of support from people you know
    • attending an intervention programme, either in a group or one-to-one session
    • taking part in activities and events as a family in your local community.

    Changing or stopping support

    Talk to your child's school if:

    • your family's needs have changed
    • the support is no longer helpful
    • you want to try a different type of support.

    Your school can help you make any changes or stop the support if that is best for your family.
