Annual canvass

2.Complete the canvass

On this page:

    Introduction

You will receive a canvass form each year that you need to complete to make sure the details for your household are up to date.

    Who should complete it

Only one person in your household needs to complete the annual canvass, and you are required by law to make sure the details are correct.

You must respond if you receive an email or form in the post, asking you to reply.

    Please note:

If you own a property that is currently empty, you still need to complete the form.

    How to complete it

    You need to either:

    • confirm that the details on the annual canvass form are correct
    • inform us of any changes you need to make.

You can confirm your details have not changed or that certain details have changed in one of the following ways.

If you are not making any changes you can also let us know by text.

    What happens next

After you confirm there are no changes required or tell us about any updates, we’ll mark your household as complete and amend our records if needed.

If you have added a new elector for your household you will receive a confirmation letter. You won’t receive confirmation about any other changes.

    Deadline to respond

You should complete your annual canvass form as soon as possible. If you do not respond within about three weeks of receiving the form, you will be sent a reminder. This will give you a few extra weeks to take action. If you don’t respond to the reminder we will send a personal canvasser to your home to collect the required information.

If we still can’t get the information we require you could face a penalty.

    Penalties

It is an criminal offence for failing to provide us with the information requested and you could be fined up to £1,000.

If you provide false information, this could result in up to six months imprisonment or an unlimited fine once convicted.

You can use the online household enquiry response service to complete the canvass. This will be available during the annual canvass period and is the easiest way to confirm or update your details.

    What you need

On the first page of the form you will need to provide your part one and part two security codes. These are printed in box two on the front of the annual canvass form you have been sent. You’ll then be able to confirm your details are correct or make any required changes.

    Please note:

You can only use the online service if you have a valid email address.

    No changes required

If you have no changes to make to the form and you are just confirming the details are correct you can call and submit an automated response. You will be asked to:

    • key in your part one and part two security codes. These are printed in box two on the front of the annual canvass form you have been sent
    • press the 0 (zero) button to confirm all of your details are correct.

    Changes required

If you need to make changes and cannot use the online method above, you can:

    Post

If you are unable to use the online, phone or text options (text is for confirming no changes only), you can return the form by post.

Add any new information to the form you were sent or cross out any incorrect information when completing it. Refer to the types of changes information when completing your form.

We do encourage you to use an alternative method if you can, as a prepaid envelope is not included in the first stage of the canvass with the form you receive.

    Text

If you do not need to make any changes and are just confirming the details are correct you can use the text option.

You can text your part one and part two security codes (detailed in box two on the front of the annual canvass form you have been sent) followed by ‘No Change’ to the mobile number stated on your form.
