Taxi compliance tests

Find out what taxi compliance tests are, how to book one, how much the test costs and how to prepare your vehicle for the test.

What is a taxi compliance test?

A taxi compliance test checks that your vehicle meets road safety and environmental standards. Within the test the cleanliness and appearance of the interior and exterior will also be inspected to ensure that the vehicle is safe for use by the public.

Do I need the test?

If you are a taxi registered within the East Riding of Yorkshire, you must have the test completed at one of our taxi compliance test centres.

How do I book a test?

Use the online form above to book:

  • standard taxi compliance test
  • limo taxi compliance test
  • taxi trailer test.

What if my vehicle fails the taxi compliance test?

If your vehicle failed the test, you can book a vehicle partial retest. A partial retest must be done within 10 working days of your vehicle failing its initial taxi compliance test.

A partial retest will  examine all of the items that your vehicle failed on during the full test, any items that may have been affected by the repairs and any minor defect or item advised on at the time of the initial test.

If during a retest it is clear that the vehicle has any major or dangerous defects, a new VT 30 Refusal to issue a test certificate will be issued.

Your partial retest must take place at the same test centre as the original full test and it will take approximately 15 minutes.

Can I drive my vehicle if it failed the test?

Your vehicle will fail the test if the test result lists ‘dangerous’ or ‘major’ defects. You might not be allowed to drive it until the defects have been rectified.

What if I missed my test?

If you failed to show on the day of your test, you will need to book it again.

Please note: a fee may apply.

What if I missed my taxi compliance retest?

I failed to show on the day of the booking

If you had a taxi compliance retest booking but failed to show on the day, you will receive an email on the same day explaining what will happen next.

The condition of my vehicle prevented the retest to be completed

If your retest could not be completed because you presented the vehicle in a condition which prevented us from completing the retest, you need to book a full taxi compliance test again. You will not be refunded.

My retest was not completed because of other reasons

If we failed to complete your retest because we experienced any issues, such as equipment failure, you will be asked if you want to book a partial retest again or you want to receive a refund. You will be refunded via the same payment method you used to pay.

How do I prepare my vehicle for the test?

We will not be able to perform the test on your vehicle if:

  • your vehicle is so dirty that examination is unreasonably difficult
  • parts of the vehicle cannot be opened, such as a door, tailgate, boot, engine cover or the fuel cap
  • the vehicle is an a dangerous condition and considered unsafe
  • the vehicle’s registration mark, Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) or frame number is missing or cannot be read clearly enough
  • the vehicle cannot be driven due to lack of fuel, oil or any other reason
  • you cannot present a valid log book (V5C)
  • the vehicle emits substantial quantities of smoke.

The taxi compliance test includes examination of the interior of the vehicle. Please ensure the interior of your vehicle is as clean as possible.

Please note: the above criteria also applies to a partial retest. Your vehicle needs to be in an appropriate and acceptable state for a partial retest to be completed.
