Volunteering for the Countryside Access Service

East Riding of Yorkshire's Countryside Access Team is primarily concerned with connecting people with the countryside through its work to maintain countryside paths, and East Riding owned land and nature reserves.

What does the Countryside Access Team do?

East Riding of Yorkshire's Countryside Access Team is primarily concerned with connecting people with the countryside through its work to maintain countryside paths, and East Riding owned land and nature reserves. An events programme enables all ages and abilities to visit the countryside is a safe and enjoyable way. Access to the countryside contributes significantly to our quality of life. Specific work areas include the following:

  • Maintenance of public rights of way
  • Management of ERYC owned Local Nature Reserves, Country Parks, Picnic sites and disused railway lines
  • Management of access to open countryside and registered common
  • Development of the Walking the Riding website
  • Delivery of a vibrant countryside events programme
  • Production of leaflets and interpretative features to enable the public to enjoy visiting nature reserves.

What are the basic requirements to volunteer for the Countryside Access Team?

To volunteer within Countryside Access Team, you must be enthusiastic about the countryside and be committed to encouraging others to visit and learn from its natural beauty. You must be prepared to undertake training and be committed to promoting equality and diversity. Previous experience of countryside volunteering is desirable, but training will be provided.

For some roles specialist qualifications may be required. The Countryside Access Team always tries to work around the needs and interests of the volunteer themselves.

What is the timescale for volunteering with the Countryside Access Team?

Some volunteering opportunities within the Countryside Access Team may be for a specific event or project, and so could be time-limited. Other opportunities may be ongoing. We will always try to be as flexible as possible to ensure the best volunteering experience for all parties.

Is training available?

Training to enhance your ability to fulfil your volunteering role will be available. It is expected that all volunteers will complete basic countryside induction training as soon as possible after becoming a volunteer.
