Portage is an early educational service for families who have a baby or young child (0-5 years) who needs extra support to help him or her learn new skills. Portage works with families to help them to deliver a teaching programme that is tailored to their child’s individual needs. In addition, Portage Workers deliver small group sessions for children and parents.
Volunteers support Portage Workers to deliver the group sessions at Children’s Centres.
Volunteers must have the ability to communicate effectively and sensitively with parents, carers and children. Being able to work well within a team is essential. Experience of caring for or working with pre-school children who have additional needs is desirable.
There is no time limit as long as a group that a volunteer is supporting continues to run. Occasionally groups are re-located to a different Children’s Centre.
All volunteers will be expected to complete a Basic Portage Workshop, Safeguarding training and Lifting and Handling of Objects course In addition, Portage volunteers are given training in signing and other speech and language courses (when available).
