Brick/tile from watching brief at Manor Farm, Portington (grid ref SE7875 3080), in 1999. Hand made and machine made examples, showing three types of manufacture: slop moulding, pallet moulding and machine made (all using alluvial clay). The bricks are mostly post late 17th century, but with some re-use of earlier material. The tile is mainly post 17th century pantile, but with some flat roof tiles also. See finds report for further details. The site lies within the moated enclosure that contained the manor house of the Portington family for over 400 years. Structures detected during the work may relate to the original house, which was demolished in 1570. The earliest layers dated to the late 12th / early 13th centuries.
