Title: Molescroft Toll Bar
Item Name: Buildings

Description:

B/W photograph showing the toll bar at Molescroft in the late 19th century. Looking from Malton Road towards Beverley. The toll house stood on the site of the current roundabout. Photograph brought in to old photograph day in July 2001, by Mr Kemp, of Beverley. Information subsequently supplied suggests that in the mid 1800’s the toll booth was small and unsightly as opposed to nearby New Walk which was an up and coming area. Travellers were avoiding paying tolls by leaving their vehicles and horses at Molescroft village inn and walking into town. Because of this it was decided to demolish it and build a new one at the junction of Malton & Driffield roads in Molescroft.
