Plans to build a Palladian villa (a design for which appears in vol. 4 of Vitruvius Britannicus) in the 1730s were not carried out, although the gardens were laid out and a garden seat or pavilion was built. The present house, built in the 1770s, is of grey brick with stone dressings. The three-storey, five-bay central block was originally linked to three-bay pavilions at each side, of which only one survives intact. The house was remodelled in the 1870s. The 18th-century Rococco garden survives together with the 19th-century landscaped park. Architects & Craftsmen: Designed by Thomas Atkinson. Alterations of 1872-7 by Payne & Talbot of Birmingham. Craftsmen employed at Dalton in the 1770s include Jeremiah Hargrave and George Earle, both of Hull. Gardens laid out in 1730s with advice from Thomas Knowlton, and parkland laid out c. 1827 by J.N. Sleed with further landscaping in the 1870s by William Broderick Thomas.
