Description:

Built of brick with stone details, the impressive east front of the hall consists of a nine-bay, three-storey central range with square castellated towers at each end from which two wings project to form a large entrance court. Architects & Craftsmen: Alterations of 1757-68 to designs of Thomas Lightoler. Other work of the 1770s-80s by James Wyatt who designed the ballroom in 1775 and Thomas Atkinson whose work included the former billiard room (now the chapel), and the orangery of 1788. Among the numerous craftsmen employed in the 18th century were Domenico Bartoli, John Cheere, Williams Collins, Giuseppe Cortese, Joseph and Jeremiah Hargrave of Hull and James Henderson of York. The grounds were landscaped by Capability Brown.
