Description:

An engraving of c. 1700 shows an Elizabethan mansion with late 17th-century three-bay projecting wings. The house was demolished 1818-19 by the 6th Duke of Devonshire. Several features from the formal gardens survive. Architects & Craftsmen: Built 1589, with major extensions and alterations of the 1670s. 17th-century extensions to the house probably designed by Robert Hooke who also laid out the formal gardens. The park was landscaped in the 1730s by the 3rd Lord Burlington and his gardener, Thomas Knowlton.
