Title: Portington Hall
Item Name: Country House

Description:

Red brick with stone quoins; hipped pantiled roof. Three-bay centre block with one-bay wings. Projecting two-storey porch. Some sources give an earlier building date (1582), but the 1672 hearth tax assessment indicates that Henry Portington had recently built a new house where he was living, although his old house had not been demolished. The style of Portington Hall is typical of the mid-late 17th century. An earlier house apparently survived into the 19th century; part of the moat remains. Architects & Craftsmen: Not known. Restored in the late 1930s by the architect Sir William Milner.
