Hessle mill, on Hessle foreshore, 1903. The lady in the bath chair is Susannah Smith (nee Nicholson) 1836-1903 with her daughter Susan Nicholson Holmes (nee Smith). Susan was the wife of George Foster Holmes and they lived at the Cliff on Hessle Foreshore. Susannah was the widow of Arthur Joseph Smith - three times Lord Mayor of Doncaster. Susannah was recovering from a heart attack and came to Hessle in March 1903 to convalesce with her daughter and son in law - she died on the 3rd of May 1903 at Riverview House on the Foreshore (which is still there and is near where the Cliff once stood). Susan died at the Cliff in 1927 and her husband George Foster Holmes died at the Cliff in 1940.
