Title: Iron helmet used by egg climmers

Description:

Circular domed iron helmet, with steel rim, leather lining and canvas strap. Faint lettering in white on the outside, including a large "M". The equipment would have been used when climbing down clifts to collect seabird eggs. In East Yorkshire this activity was often referred to as egg climming and the men who collected the eggs as egg climmers. Watching the egg climmers was a popular activity for tourists. A number of images of the egg climmers can be found by searching "climmer" and "climming".
